The designer, the artist, the sculptor Betty Powers had this to say about her work, ” There is a bit of glare but, you will get the idea”.

Perhaps she will share more of her work. And perhaps she will have more to say.

I have watched Betty Powers grow from an enthusiastic craftsman into a talented Sculptor over a period of perhaps twenty years or so.

Watching her career develop has been inspiring.

Betty had this to say: “It was inspired”.  I would add that this is true with all her work. I once said that I had watched her grow from craftsman to artist.  That was unfair and untrue.  There is the hand of the Craftsman and the soul of the Artist in every creation. Whether made by God or mankind, all is inspired.

Our first scream is an involuntary response to the first gasp. It occurs at the moment of our first sensation of fear; our first decision, our first affirmation and our initial attempt at managing our place in this new world.

This first noisy protest is interrupted with cradled arms and soft, cooing Mommy Words, which lend a hint that this dangerous world into which we have been thrust has an oasis of safety; ours for the price of a scream.

The calming voice, the gentle words are familiar to the newly initiated. The touch of Mother’s hands are a new sensation but it too is somehow, known.

Our first scientific experiment has begun.

This is our first experience at asking for and receiving Love, a sensation which will in future decades become confused with Approval.

Our  experiments will become more sophisticated if not necessarily objective; life and the events that greet us will be measured, examined, dissected and reassembled as we seek to secure Maximum Safety.

Life may be more difficult for those of us who have missed the touching and the softly spoken words of gentle parenting. Perhaps we ask for help.

Later, in the language of Mommy Words we may even ask another, untouched soul “May I lend a hand?”

And a Spark of The Spirit ignites the flame of LOVE.

BACK TO THE PLANET OF THE APES

Many of my friends with whom I have enjoyed the convenience of cellular conversations, no longer answer when I call; they tell me I should text. The result is that I have fewer cellular conversations.

Texting is not a replacement for speech; it is in fact, a threat to spoken vocabulary. We all possess several vocabularies. The most limited of these sub-categories is Text Language which is the smallest of them all. TL is quickly replacing our reporting vocabulary, our reading vocabulary and our conversational vocabulary, all of which until recently were for most people our largest vocabularies.

The smart phone is returning us to a Planet of the Apes.

CONTINUITY

In the eighties I entered the interior design field by designing signed and numbered pieces of furniture.  Most of my clients discovered my creations at Lee Broom Gallery and Design at Scottsdale rd and Shea Blvd.

A few years ago I moved the Gallery to my home in Arcadia  where I now share space with a collection of rare and/or popular works of art. the majority of which are on paper; rare prints and watercolors and occasionally a few pieces of sculpture.

From Lafayette Blvd  I arrive at your home or office with designer tools and an eye for continuity. I leave you with a contented smile.

Framing is by my Lee Broom Design and assembled by Bill Fielder and his Tempe crew on Hohokam.
